When would a programmer decide to work for equity? Do have a chance of getting a decent reliable developer or software programmer? The company is doing something pretty innovative and cutting edge: developing an online video editing software to make editing faster, better and easier. We are also developing an interactive video streaming website.
Any response/ suggestions or feedback will be very welcome

Hi,
I have been reading some of the posts and replies between members in the Forum. I am new to Dev Shed Forums and do not have much programming or web design experience(I am a finance and strategy person) but I am working on a company whose mission I profoundly believe in and was wondering if anyone could give me advice on hiring a web developer (PHP) and software programmer in return for equity?
I need to better understand the skills I should be looking for and how I can test for these if my programmer is based in a different country. I have had a crazy time looking for a web developer to develop our website for equity and have ended up having to let go of 3 people over the course of 12 months which is costly especially for the team. When would a programmer decide to work for equity? Do have a chance of getting a decent reliable developer or software programmer? You could check on freelancing sites such as Scriptlance, Guru.com, or Elance and look for coders with good ratings and a solid portfolio/resume.

First of all you need to convince the programmer you intend to hire that your project will succeed, and that the project will actually take off and will be viable, without that you can't get them.

Hi Dan,
Thank you for your obsevation but I saw all those posts. My main question is how do I ensure that the programmer has the skills I want? What kind of questions do I ask of them? I have hired many people that have turned out not to have the skills. All that we are doing is pretty blue ocean strategy in terms of technology and industry

what skills do you want them to have?
In my own opinion if you have to ask for a specific skillset you are looking at the wrong criteria for hiring. Any programmer should be able to develop any skillset within his programming languages of choice on demand, if he/she can't they are not worthy of your time (or anyone elses time for that matter),
Often in many paid jobs programmers not only have to learn a new skillset but also new languages on the job, why should it be any different in your case?

When would a programmer decide to work for equity?
When they can't get hired in any other way.
Your project sounds very challenging from a technical perspective.

Dan you just described me in that post above. You said you don't have a lot of experience with programming - but what exactly would this job entail for the programmer. Is he working alone?
